It takes time and training to become a locksmith. Most states do not require certification, but that doesn’t mean the option isn’t present. Locksmiths have two choices for a career path. On the job training is a valuable option, but many locksmiths who want to start their own business choose to enroll in a certification program. These are found in nearly every city and all cover similar training criteria. If you’re interested in training as a locksmith, here are the things you’ll learn about.
Residential locksmithing training
The first step in locksmithing is always the basics of residential hardware. This is one of the most important, but also the most basic skills a locksmith will learn. Training will include the different types and applications of door hardware, how to rekey locks and perform hardware swaps, as well as how to change out or drill mailbox locks.
Special skills
Lockpicking and lockbumping are two methods for accomplishing the same thing. Both open a lock. Whereas lockpicking involves the use of picks in order to individually set each tumbler of the lock into position, bump keys are created for specific locks. Bump keys use physics to bump pins into place coupled with a light pressure on the tumbler. This provides the opportunity to turn the lock open in the brief second when the pins “jump” and align.
What are the basics of a locksmith certification?
These typically fall into two categories with overlapping skill sets. Basics focus heavily on automotive and residential locksmithing skills. Students in these courses will need to purchase a lockpick set and pinning kit. Pinning kits supply the user with the necessary tools to rekey a lock. Pins are replaceable in locks so that you can get a new key on the spot. A locksmith just needs to remove the hardware, replace the pins with new ones that match the new key, and you’re ready to go.
Advanced residential coursework.
- Students learn how to use and program electronic locks.
- Locksmiths learn how to make impressions of keys and duplicate a key using the impression.
- Repairing locks and drilling residential locks and cam locks.
Automotive coursework.
Car keys and locks differ from house locks in a number of ways. Keys may be programmed, and there are frequently unique keys for the trunk and dash panel. Smiths will learn how to remove and repair a vehicle ignition, cut and program keys, and use equipment for laser duplication.
What does advanced certification work look like?
Continuing the process involves working on more challenging operations using more complex hardware and locking mechanisms. These typically include servicing and repair of safes as well as how to replace older locking styles with newer ones.
Advanced work also leans heavily towards commercial applications. Businesses typically demand greater control and security in their line of work. This may include locks with cores, high-security locks, digital locking systems with access control panels, and door closers. Once the ins and outs of commercial work are covered, a locksmith almost always undergoes additional hands-on training with their employer once hired.
